Busy Bees

I’ve gotten that feeling that I know happens to a lot of bloggers. You go away for a little while for one reason or another, and then it seems like so much has happened to catch up. The more behind you are the more overwhelming it seems, but at the same time, you want to record what happened because you don’t want to forget. That’s what this log is for to begin with.

My right arm has been really hurting despite using my left hand for everything I can do one-handed. Don’t know what I’ll do about it yet. In the mean time, my husband is doing a lot of typing and checking things online for me along with a lot of other little things when he’s home. I’ve been kind of bummed on and off that I’m not doing all the things I’d like to be doing when I’m bored at home, especially since I had such a long list of goals for the new year that is being put off until later. On the bright side, I’ve still been doing a lot that I planned on doing like getting out more.

Here are just a few of the things we’ve been up to lately…

I took family photos for a friend.

Ybarra Family

After our photo shoot, we all went to Cici’s pizza, which was Cady’s first time. Also, she’s been wanting to wear pearls lately to copy me.

I made cupcakes for my sister’s 21st birthday.

Pink Mini Rose Cupcakes

We hung out at the lake where the ducks like to hang out before we went to a rodeo themed playdate party with the playgroup we recently joined.

Then in more news, we visited toddler time at the library for the first time. We also did a free trial class at the The Little Gym and have since decided to sign up.

Cady also had her 18 month checkup, and she is BIG– 29.4 pounds!
Weight: 95th percentile
Height: 97th percentile
Head: 97th percentile

Our Valentine’s Day

Cady was nervous at the party at first. There was a lot going on. We hung out in the kitchen and snacked. She wouldn’t let me put her down. Later when Daddy came to drop off my cell phone, she wanted to leave with him. Every once and a while during the party she would ask where he was thinking that he was still at the house.

After he left, I found a comfy chair in the corner where we could have a little space but still be in the room with everyone else. She quickly forgot about her reservations when I put her down in front of all the toys. I was even able to go to the other room to get my camera or walk to the kitchen to snack. Later she would want me to be close to her again while she played or even ask me to carry her. I think being with a lot of people can be overwhelming when you’re not used to it, especially when most of them are towering over you.

She did enjoy herself. I think it will be good for her to have opportunities to play with other kids. We have some friends coming over tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to that, too.

Chocolate Cupcakes with Pink Flowers

With new shows like, Cupcake Wars and DC cupcakes, it’s plain to see that cupcakes are really hot right now. Even Buddy on Cake Boss mentioned their recent spike in popularity.

Before I started baking cakes, I only had experience baking cupcakes. There’s just something about them. I can’t sit there and eat six slices of cake, but I honestly sometimes just straight up eat six cupcakes in a row.

Personally, I love things that individually packaged. They’re so convenient. Cupcakes are like this because they are individual portions. I’ve been telling Tim that I should go back to making cupcakes when baking for us at home since we can’t eat an entire cake, but we can make a batch of cupcakes and share.

While cakes require more work to prepare for decorating, depending on their decoration and servings, cupcakes can be a lot more work to dress up than cakes because you have to do so many of each small detail. However, fondant toppers can always be made ahead of time. It’s swirling on all that frosting that tires your hands. I haven’t tried fondant or poured fondant cupcakes yet, but it does seem time consuming as well.

To be honest, I’ve had a strong craving for cupcakes since Friday night, and I did need to practice my swirl. I’ve learned that for this look, I definitely prefer the 1M to the 2D, although the 2d would be perfect for making that rose appearance should I ever master that. I tried adding sugar pearls, but that’s easier said than done since they would rather roll away than stick to the icing. I had made the flowers previously with no specific plans as to what I would use them for, and they came in handy. The pink five petal flowers will probably be making many more appearances in the future since I have an egg carton full of them.

Shaggy Mum Cupcakes from Cake Club

I didn’t feel like baking the 6 cupcakes we were supposed to each bring to Cake Club today, so I bought some from one of the teachers who got them wholesale from Sam’s. Totally worth the $1. Saved time and energy and had less mess in the kitchen. I made the buttercream icing myself late last night and have way too much leftover. I used a Wilton 2D tip for the mound of icing swirled as a base, a 352 for the leaves, and a 233 for the mum itself. I think they turned out cute. The shaggy part could make sea anemones for an under the sea cake, too.
I had a good time. I always do. I wish I didn’t have to miss next month’s meeting, but it will be on the morning of Cady’s party when we’ll be busy, busy, busy!

Cupcake and Hello Kitty Fabric

Back in January when I was looking for cute stuff for Cady’s first birthday in August, I found the cutest cupcake fabrics from Robert Kaufman’s Confection Collection. I thought they would make really cute bibs, dresses and aprons, which would be really appropriate for my baking hobby.

I finally went to buy some at JoAnn, and they had the pink one that I wanted most! Unfortunately, they were 1/4 of a yard short. Sad day. I bought everything they had and tried another location with no luck. However, I did find some cute pink “Happy birthday” fabric and a red/white/blue patriotic Hello Kitty print. Not that I’m going to give up on those cupcakes.
