2011 New Year’s Resolutions

Last new year’s eve. Cady and I both brought pajamas to the party and were wearing them by 10pm. We went home before midnight and probably will do the same this year.

Well, I guess I started thinking about New Year’s Resolutions even earlier this year (a couple weeks before Thanksgiving) than last year. What can I say? I get excited by the new start. I was looking over my list from last year, and I’ve decided that some goals just won’t get done, which is fine. Some goals were also kind of vague, but that’s okay. Some of my new ones are, too.
I have an even bigger, more ambitious list for this new year:

– cook new recipes and learn Filipino cooking
– sew, crochet, other crafts, and Silhouette machine projects
– cake/cupcake decorating
– get out more and explore fun things to do in the area
– improve photography skills, photograph daily (and sometimes, be in more of the photos)
– take more family videos
– take dogs to dog park, spend more quality time with them
– give Cady more opportunities to play with other kids
– learn how use Photoshop and to install and use Photoshop actions
– go to church at least once a week
– work on decreasing “Real Age” (eating red meat once a week or less, eating fish more than once a week, flossing, exercise, taking a multi-vitamin daily, eating better)
– post tutorials and recipes on the blog
– spend time with mommy friends (I’ve been a hermit unless Tim was taking me somewhere)
– write to my sponsor child every month and mail letter in a timely manner

Crochet Class

I left the safety of my suburb today to venture into a trendy part of the city with my husband for my crochet class at the “sewing lounge.” He read a book in a coffee shop while waiting for me.

I’ll be honest and admit that I thought I knew what I was doing, but then I found myself at the bottom 25% of my class. There were a total of four people in the class.

We learned a how to do the chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and treble crochet. I ended up falling way behind and had to skip two rows, so that I could learn the last stitch.

The swatch should’ve turned out looking like a rectangle, but here is how mine turned out.

Regardless of my less than perfect early attempt at crochet, I have high hopes. I just need practice, practice, practice.
Here are some projects I think I’d like to successfully make in the future:

Counting down the days til my crochet class!

I’ve been thinking about either taking up knitting or crochet for some time now because I want Cady to have more hats that fit her big, ever growing noggin now that it’s getting cold.

Plus she just looks good in hats.

[For Example]

Yeah that’s a face made for little hats.

Well, I was in Macy’s to use a giftcard (on the baby instead of me, of course), and their mittens/hat set was $18. That’s a bit high for me. I had wanted crochet headbands a while back and was able to find them in bulk on Ebay, but now I’ve decided to learn the craft myself.

I didn’t know the difference between knitting and crochet until I posted the question for my Facebook friends, who all had varying opinions on which was better and easier and read Samster Mommy’s blog who convinced me that crochet was the way to go and even recommended a book for it.

Now I’m signed up for a class at Sew Crafty, a “sewing lounge” where you can hang out in the knitting room, bring crafts to work on, or take classes. My husband thinks it’s kind of strange, but I think it’s pretty neat.

Too bad it’s nowhere near where I live. He doesn’t like me going alone way out there and is going to drive me, and then he’ll wait nearby. Protective but I like it. He seems to have a problem with the neighborhood even though it seems alright to me as far as I can tell (online or just driving by on the freeway). He knows these things better than me, and I’m now on, I’ll listen to people’s warnings (unlike when my dad told me a class was in a bad area where cars got broken into a lot, and low and behold, my car was broken into).
