2011 New Year’s Resolutions

Last new year’s eve. Cady and I both brought pajamas to the party and were wearing them by 10pm. We went home before midnight and probably will do the same this year.

Well, I guess I started thinking about New Year’s Resolutions even earlier this year (a couple weeks before Thanksgiving) than last year. What can I say? I get excited by the new start. I was looking over my list from last year, and I’ve decided that some goals just won’t get done, which is fine. Some goals were also kind of vague, but that’s okay. Some of my new ones are, too.
I have an even bigger, more ambitious list for this new year:

– cook new recipes and learn Filipino cooking
– sew, crochet, other crafts, and Silhouette machine projects
– cake/cupcake decorating
– get out more and explore fun things to do in the area
– improve photography skills, photograph daily (and sometimes, be in more of the photos)
– take more family videos
– take dogs to dog park, spend more quality time with them
– give Cady more opportunities to play with other kids
– learn how use Photoshop and to install and use Photoshop actions
– go to church at least once a week
– work on decreasing “Real Age” (eating red meat once a week or less, eating fish more than once a week, flossing, exercise, taking a multi-vitamin daily, eating better)
– post tutorials and recipes on the blog
– spend time with mommy friends (I’ve been a hermit unless Tim was taking me somewhere)
– write to my sponsor child every month and mail letter in a timely manner

Cady’s First Birthday Party

Here it is finally. The long overdue post of Cady’s much anticipated first birthday. There were too many beautiful photos to post them all, but here are some of the details of the party itself.

I had started thinking about Cady’s August birthday party in January when she was about 5 months old. The birthday cake, smash cake, decorations, gift bags, and party favor bows were all handmade at home with love by Mommy with the help of other family members who were key to making sure everything went smoothly for the big day. Family from West Virginia and California even few in for a few days to celebrate the momentous occasion. There were three different outfits (luckily we were prepared for the messes that would inevitably occur), lots of trips to Michael’s Arts and Crafts, and many party blogs browsed for pink first birthday party ideas.

My Silhouette Arrived!

With all the wedding thoughts clouding my brain the last couple of days, I completely forgot I was waiting for my Silhouette to arrive until it came in today! My husband is always excited when we get something new no matter what it is, so he’s excited, too. He wants to see it in action. Thank you, thank you, thank you Silhouette and Grosgrain Fabulous for the awesome giveaway. This is so cool.

[ Quinnie is excited, too. Kinda. ]

Baylor Baby T Shirt Dress

Yay! I’m so excited to have completed my first baby t shirt dress. I used Lil Blue Boo’s Recycled T Shirt Sienna Dress Pattern that I purchased at her Etsy shop. Cady’s with her grandparents, so I’ll have to update with pictures of her modeling it another time. It turned out great despite one visible mistake that I’m just not in the mood to fix right now, but I’ll probably do it before she actually wears it to homecoming.

Before: two shirts that didn’t fit well anymore

After: a dress for game day!

I want a Silhouette!

These craft cutters have been all the buzz lately. I’m so glad I didn’t have a cricut yet because this one is way better. There are no expensive cartridges to buy. The machine comes with lots of fonts and graphics, you can buy some at their website, or you can use any that you have or create on your computer. Pretty neat. You can do etching, vinyl, paper crafts, party projects like cupcake wrappers, and heat transfers, which is what I look forward to making most, I think.
I put this on my never ending and always changing wish list and have been entering every blog Silhouette giveaway that comes up in my bloglist including the one right now at Kara’s Party Ideas.
Hmm… Someday…

Tutu #2: Green & Pink

I made this green and pink tutu for Cadence to wear next weekend, but she was with her grandparents, which left either Teddy or Quinn as my options for models. I used the Samster Mommy tutu tutorial. I tied three strips at a time, and when I was done tying, I separated all the layers to make it really poof. I used one of Cady’s books in place of a piece of cardboard because it was the right length and matched up to the length of one of her skirts, which I also used for the waist measurement. I also used one of the little kid chairs for her party to hold the elastic while I tied the tulle.

My first tutu!

I made my first tutu tonight for the Samster Mommy Tutu Drive for the Princess Alexa Foundation. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I will definitely make tutus someday for Cady when she’s ready to play dress up (or maybe just for some cute photos).

The flower on the tutu is an alligator style hair clip that was only $3.99 at Hobby Lobby, and the tulle is on a roll from the wedding section. 120 ft was $5.99, but all the wedding supplies were 50% off. I used the entire roll, and I already had elastic at home. I used the “10 minute tutu” tutorial on the Samster Mommy site that you can find on the right side column among all the tutorial links.

[ The flower matches the color of the tulle in person. ]

I won a giveaway for the first time!

I’m so excited because I won a giveaway for the first time, and it’s for something I really like! I won The Twirl Skirt pattern from Lil Blue Boo.

{By the way, this post was not requested by LBB as a condition of my win nor do I get anything from writing this. I just wanted to share.}

Here’s what’s included in her original PDF pattern & tutorial:
16 pages of easy to follow step-by-step complete sewing instructions
41 full color images, diagrams and drawings to demonstrate pattern specifics
10 pattern pages which include separate patterns for each size
Options for adding maternity waistband or lengthening the skirt and an idea book

The sizes included in the pattern are:
12-18M, 24M/2T, 3T/4T, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12
Women’s XS to XL
Doll size patterns for 10″ and 15″ Waldorf dolls (Bamboletta, AppleTreeHouse, Dragonsfly Hollow etc), American Girl, Pottery Barn or other similarly sized dolls.

In case you didn’t know, she sells patterns and clothes, and I absolutely love ’em. I’ve been eyeing her Sienna Dress Pattern to make a t shirt dress for Cady to wear to homecoming in October. I’ve really been slacking off on my sewing and was focusing on cakes instead, but after Cady’s party next month my goal is to get back together with my poor, neglected sewing machine (and give crochet another try, too).

I’ve been looking through all the photos of clothes people have made using her patterns on Facebook and Flickr, and the wheels in my head are turning.

Unfinished (Unstarted) Projects

I’ve been so busy buying cake supplies, thinking about cakes, taking cake decorating classes, making and decorating cakes, and looking at every cake related thing online, that I’ve completely neglected my sewing machine!

I have so many patterns I have yet to use and so much fabric just waiting to fulfill it’s destiny and become something. I realized today that I had made a resolution to make something like 40 crafts this year, and I haven’t made a single one.

Well since the year is halfway over, I am pretty sure I won’t make that goal, but it’s never to late to do something.

I have a luau themed cake that’s going to be picked up Saturday morning, and when I’m done with that, I’m going to sew something this weekend. I am determined!

Since the 4th of July is almost upon us, I’ve decided to make my first project making Cady and Quinn matching dresses with the patriotic Hello Kitty Fabric I bought last month.

Cupcake and Hello Kitty Fabric

Back in January when I was looking for cute stuff for Cady’s first birthday in August, I found the cutest cupcake fabrics from Robert Kaufman’s Confection Collection. I thought they would make really cute bibs, dresses and aprons, which would be really appropriate for my baking hobby.

I finally went to buy some at JoAnn, and they had the pink one that I wanted most! Unfortunately, they were 1/4 of a yard short. Sad day. I bought everything they had and tried another location with no luck. However, I did find some cute pink “Happy birthday” fabric and a red/white/blue patriotic Hello Kitty print. Not that I’m going to give up on those cupcakes.
