Oh no, Asian reality show (Jersey Shore style)

My hubby sent me a link a friend of his posted on Facebook of a blogpost about a new reality show created by Tyrese modeled after MTV’s Jersey Shore. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last year, Jersey Shore is a reality show featuring poorly behaved Italian-Americans who further reinforce stereotypes. I’ll admit. I’m guilty of watching the show. I have no interest in seeing a second season though. I’m sure it will be exactly the same.

I think this is terrible because Asians on television, in my opinion, have yet to break into the mainstream shows as normal, everyday people. By normal I mean main characters who are not mere comic relief characters or one dimensional stereotypes such as the martial arts master, the math nerd, or the gang member. Whites, Hispanics, and African Americans all have shows where they are regular working people who have friends, families, and day to day mishaps or conficts we can relate to. The characters are people, not just a race.

For example, Monk was a breakthrough because the main character is an Arab-American who did not play a racial stereotype, and race was not even a defining characteristic for him. We focused on his quirks, his relationships, his personal demons, and his ability to solve crimes while being humorous and entertaining.

Well, I guess it wouldn’t be fair to hold Asians to a higher standard than everyone else, and it seems this is the era of reality television. They might as well join in with everyone else that will have their worst moments made fun of on The Soup and parodied on Saturday Night Live.
