Cake Club

The first meeting of our cake club was held. I’m very excited about it. Some clubs are just education, some are just social, some are charitable, and this club is going to try to combine them all. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. Everybody there has different skill levels, and I hope we can learn from each other.

The club was started by my cake course instructor and a good friend of hers who was her instructor and who also continues to teach in the area. One of the members seems to have done many cakes already. At least two have been doing this over a year. One is about to graduate as a pastry chef.

They had two demonstrations to show us, we talked, we introduced ourselves, we ate cookies and punch, and we learned random but useful little tidbits here and there that I may not have known if I wasn’t there.

Luckily the meeting was at a time that I could leave the baby with Tim, and they plan on having most of the meetings on weekends, which would be great for me.

We may not meet next month because of Mother’s Day, college graduations, high school graduations, Memorial Day weekend, etc. That’s ok. Everybody there has lives: jobs, children, families, school, and more.

I have to admit though, that even being very busy with the baby and everything else at home, I spend a lot of time trying to learn more on this subject. For example, I have a stack of books on my desk right now, and most of them are cookbooks, but I’m also reading about how ovens work and why they can mess up your cakes. It’s happened to me once, but now I think I’ll know how to avoid these problems in the future. I also watch a lot of demonstrative videos on YouTube, and I watch them repeatedly to make sure I understand what they’re doing for when it’s my turn to try it out.

I think this one is particularly useful. I haven’t heard of this scraping method in class or in the club, but I am definitely going to try it with wax paper.

  1. I'm not into cooking or baking, but I did watch the video about making a smooth cake. That was so cool. It makes me think I could do it, but I don't really have any interest in trying. LOL
